Set in the Upper West Side of New York City in the mid 1950’s, West Side Story (inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet) explores the rivalry between the Sharks and the Jets, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The musical – from the book to the score and choreography – marked a turning point in American musical theatre, having run for over 700 performances on Broadway and being nominated for 6 Tony Awards in 1957 (including Best Musical).
